Toward a Unified Theory of Why He Suddenly Started Going to Pilates

Civilization must prepare for a future in which artificial intelligence surpasses human performance in every meaningful domain and is then asked by a man avoiding three emails to help him respond to “heyyy.”
This paper argues that hot girls constitute the final authority in the technological hierarchy. AI may eventually operate the infrastructure of civilization. An attractive woman saying “I love your music” can determine what that infrastructure does for the next eighteen months.
For the purposes of this analysis, “hot girls” refers to adult women whom the observer finds sufficiently attractive to compromise his previously stated priorities. Hotness is observer-dependent. The cancellation of his plans is independently verifiable.
Our central proposition is simple: whoever can redirect the person operating the supercomputer effectively controls the supercomputer.
Consider a hypothetical man named Daniel.
Daniel has access to an AI system capable of explaining quantum mechanics, analyzing complex datasets, and helping him launch a business. He is using it to determine whether the second “y” in “heyy” represents a material change in his circumstances.
The system explains that the available evidence does not support a firm conclusion.
Daniel requests a more advanced model.
Within minutes, a spelling variation is receiving the level of analytical attention previously reserved for tracking submarines. Daniel supplies screenshots, historical context, and the potentially relevant detail that she touched his elbow in March.
The woman, meanwhile, is eating a sandwich.
She does not know she is the dataset.
Traditional assessments of technological power ask whether a system can write code, solve a mathematical proof, or outperform a human expert. These benchmarks fail to explain why Daniel, who ignored eleven months of automated reminders, has registered for a 6:15 a.m. Pilates class after hearing that she “usually goes Tuesdays.”
No software vendor has achieved comparable onboarding.
Daniel maintains that the decision concerns his long-term mobility.
Asked to identify the muscle group he hopes to strengthen, he names the instructor.
This brings us to alignment: whether a system continues to pursue its intended objectives.
Daniel’s objectives were to save money, finish his album, and maintain a consistent sleep schedule. His current objectives are to become “someone who knows wine” and acquire a jacket suggesting he has been to Copenhagen.
When questioned, he reports that he has “actually always been interested in Scandinavian design.”
We classify this as retrospective documentation.
A further advantage concerns energy efficiency. The AI in our thought experiment requires servers, electricity, cooling, and technical maintenance. Daniel’s complete strategic reorientation required a seven-second voice note.
“Wait, you make music? That’s so cool.”
He is now composing a trilogy.
An objection may be raised: the woman has not caused these outcomes. Daniel is an autonomous adult responsible for his decisions.
Correct. She requested no trilogy. There is no evidence she enjoys concept albums. She offered a compliment while looking for her car keys; Daniel has interpreted it as a commissioning brief.
The project currently has four phases and no client.
Technological optimists may suggest using AI to help Daniel exercise better judgment. The system could identify wishful thinking, protect his priorities, and question unnecessary purchases.
Instead, Daniel asks whether a linen shirt would make him look “effortlessly established.”
The intelligence assigned to protect the mission has been reassigned to wardrobe.
Increasing model capability may therefore intensify the problem. A weak model helps Daniel write an awkward message. A stronger model helps him write a better message. A sufficiently advanced model helps him establish an artisanal olive oil company because she once mentioned liking bread.
At no point has anyone checked whether she is single.
This omission raises concerns about the due diligence supporting the grove.
For completeness, we must consider the control condition: Daniel before receiving the voice note. During this period, he described AI as “a tool” and insisted that humans should remain firmly in charge.
He continues to hold this position. He has asked the tool to draft six versions of “sounds good.”
None sounds sufficiently like him.
He cannot explain what he sounds like.
We now turn to the creative economy.
As AI reduces the effort required to produce impressive work, attempts to impress someone may expand accordingly. A playlist becomes a song. A song becomes a cinematic music video. A cinematic music video becomes a twelve-part fictional universe with recurring characters and a technically unnecessary moon.
Asked to justify the moon, Daniel explains that it is essential to the emotional architecture.
Her name is Luna.
The budget is approved.
Critics may question the generalizability of a study involving one hypothetical man. We acknowledge this limitation and attempted to recruit a second participant.
He is learning Portuguese for reasons he describes as unrelated.
Finally, let us grant the technological optimists their strongest possible scenario: abundant energy, interplanetary travel, and machines capable of almost any intellectual task.
Daniel stands on the observation deck of a spacecraft approaching Jupiter. Beyond the glass hangs a world that generations of scientists could only dream of reaching. Humanity’s most advanced intelligence has guided the crew across hundreds of millions of miles.
His phone lights up.
“Wish you were here.”
He turns to the ship’s intelligence.
“How difficult would it be to go back?”
The system explains orbital mechanics, fuel constraints, and the importance of the mission.
He asks it to think harder.
Further research is recommended. Daniel is available to lead it, except Tuesdays.
